THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY (17th Century)

Floor 1

Century “heroic” for the mathematics that brought new ideas and methods that are the basis of modern mathematics.

  • I Logarithms of Nepero and Briggs, which will allow Kepler to elaborate the theory on planetary orbits and will also open the way to calculation using mechanical methods.
  • With Galileo, father of the experimental method, born modern science.
  • Cartesio with the “Géométrie” exposes an idea, indeed a method, revolutionary: merges the algebra with the geometry, the analytical geometry is born.
  • Stop founds the theory of numbers and participates with Pascal to the creation of theory of probability. Pascal also builds a “machine to count”, the famous Pascaline.
  • Two other fundamental and genial ideas of mathematics, derivatives and the Total, which are the basis of infinitesimal calculation, are mainly due to German Leibniz and English Newton.
